Finding My People
I'm honored and excited to share that today I've joined Protocol Labs to help build a decentralized compute project "Bacalhau" (github). My passion for working in the Crypto/Web3 space has been to bring the best of Enterprise/Web2 infrastructure to this new decentralized ecosystem. There are many technologies and business models that should be rebuilt for Web3, yet this process is stunted due to a lack of modern technical tooling. The Bacalhau project aims to solve this problem in an open, community driven way.
Protocol Labs was founded in 2014 by Juan Benet to support the development of a key decentralized technology named IPFS (Interplanetary Filesystem). Since then the company has helped establish IPFS as a keystone Web3 technology, along with a host of other notable projects such as Filecoin and libp2p.
In early February I learned that David Aronchick and his team at Protocol Labs had been actively working to solve similar problems that I was passionate about. After spending time learning about his vision and deep history in building massively impactful core infrastructure, I was sold.
Our project is named Bacalhau after the Portuguese word for salted cod fish. Since the project is building Compute Over Data (C.O.D.) and the project was envisioned at a conference in Portugal .. voila!
I've been fortunate to join the team last week in Paris for our first community conference. It was incredible to spend the week among dozens of people who are all equally passionate about the global impact that an open platform like Bacalhau can provide.
What's next?
We are building! Our first target group of users are academics who have code associated with their papers. We want to enable those authors to run their work on our platform to improve reproducibility within the scientific community. If you know of any research teams that are aligned with this vision - please let me know.
We are hiring! Our team is growing quickly, in particular we are looking for engineers with a coding background in a modern language and are comfortable learning and building with new crypto/Web3 technologies. If you're equally passionate about building new tech in Web3 - please reach out.
